Water
Treatment
Water is used in
commercial and industrial businesses to move heat from one place to
another. This heat is
sometimes added to a process or removed as in Heating and Air conditioning.
Air conditioning is not the process of making cold air, but the
process of removing the heat from the air.
In larger air conditioning systems water is used for this process.
Water is also converted to steam to add heat to a process.
Water is the "King"
of heat transfer fluids. It
can transport more heat than any other liquid.
However, water is also known as the universal solvent.
It can dissolve anything if given enough time and flow.
Water also contains solids that if over saturated will deposit onto
the heated portions of the system. Because
of the chemical make-up of water and its characteristics to dissolve
anything, we must prepare the water or treat the water to ensure natural
reactions do not occur. The
process is called water treatment. Water
treatment programs are designed to control corrosion, prevent scale and
control microbiological growths.

Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction between a substance
and its environment. In
order to stifle this reaction we must add corrosion inhibitors to
protect the system. Several
factors must be taken into consideration. What type of metal is the
system made of? What is
the quality of the water flowing through the system?
What is the temperature of the water?
What type of corrosion inhibitors are added to the system?
These factors must be considered to properly protect the anode
and cathode to control this corrosion reaction. |
 |
Scale is a deposition of minerals.
These minerals are naturally found in water and when the
solubility of the water is exceeded, the minerals will precipitate.
Several factors must be considered.
What is the Saturation point of the water?
What temperature is the system exposed to?
What type of scale inhibitors are being added to the system?
When the solids in the water are kept in “Balance”
deposition can be prevented. |

Microbiological Growth exists in the form of Algae, Bacteria
and Slime. The most common
is algae, but all three can cause severe problems in your system or
with your health if left untreated.
There are many types of biocides to control microbiological
growths, but your water treatment professional can determine what’s
best for your overall treatment. You
must eradicate any active growth and maintain a residual to maintain
control of the system. |
